Description:
Nature of Light: Evidence for wave theory. Huygen's wave theory. Electromagnetic theory and electromagnetic waves, electromagnetic spectrum, Light, quanta (photons in black body radiation)
photoelectric effect and Compton scattering. Nature of light and quantum mechanics.

Sources of Radiation: Discrete sources: hydrogen atom, quantum rotation, quantum oscillator. Continuous sources: bremstrahlung, Cerenkow radiation. Thermal radiation. Types of spectra, spectral series, Rydbeng Formula, Pitz principle, hyperfine structure. Absolute measurement of light intensity.

Interference of two beams: Principle of superposition, Young's experiment and variations of it. Thin films. Michelson
interferometer-applications, Fourier analysis of finite wave trains, coherent and incoherent sources, spectral line widths.

Interference of multiple beams: The diffraction grating in theory and experiments, Resolving power of grating. Multiple reflections: Transmitted and reflected intensity for a place. Applications, non-reflecting films, interference filters. Fabry - Perat Interfero- meter in theory and experiment, resolving power.

Diffraction: Rectangular aperture, resolving power of a prism. Circular aperture, resolving power to telescopes and microscopes. Double-slit diffraction, stellar interferometer. Fresnel diffraction: Circular aperture and obstacle. Fresnel's integrals. Polarisation of light: Polarisation by reflection, scattering, double refraction: Uniaxial crystals by Huygens constructions, production and detection of liner, circular, and elliptical polarisation light. Nicol Prism, Interference of polarised light. Analysis of polarised light. Optical activity, polari-meters. Polarisation of light emitted by atoms, band width coherence line.

Assessment is by assignments and examination.

Prerequisites: PHS 207.
