Absolute measurement of light intensity. Interference of two beams: Principle of superposition, Young's experiment and variations of it. Thin films. Michelson interferometer-applications, Fourier analysis of finite wave trains, coherent and incoherent sources, spectral line widths. Interference of multiple beams: The diffraction grating in theory and experiments, Resolving power of grating. Multiple reflections: Transmitted and reflected intensity for a place. Applications, non-reflecting films, interference filters. Fabry - Perat Interfero- meter in theory and experiment, resolving power. Diffraction: Rectangular aperture, resolving power of a prism. Circular aperture, resolving power to telescopes and microscopes. Double-slit diffraction, stellar interferometer. Fresnel diffraction: Circular aperture and obstacle. Fresnel's integrals. Polarisation of light: Polarisation by reflection, scattering, double refraction: Uniaxial crystals by Huygens constructions, production and detection of liner, circular, and elliptical polarisation light. Nicol Prism, Interference of polarised light. Analysis of polarised light. Optical activity, polari-meters. Polarisation of light emitted by atoms, band width coherence line. Assessment is by assignments and examination. Prerequisites: PHS 207.
